Both LOVEFiLM and NOW TV offer films but only LOVEFiLM has TV shows to watch online; how do their catalogues compare?
Content deals are being signed left, right and centre so it can be tricky to keep on top of who has deals with who and what's exclusive so let me try and help you out. Sky have some good recent films but do not seem to have the same range of titles as LOVEFiLM. The search function on NOW TV is also not so easy to use although they claim to have 600 titles, whilst on the LOVEFiLM site you can easily search through thousands of movies.
LOVEFiLM offers full seasons of iconic TV
LOVEFiLM has deals with most studios giving members access to full seasons of iconic American TV series such as Prison Break, Lost and my personal favourite; 24. LOVEFiLM have also signed TV deals with the BBC and ITV, giving them an impressive catalogue including crowd-pleasing titles such as Only Fools and Horses, Red Dwarf, Spooks, Hustle and Downton Abbey. Furthermore, one feature I really love about LOVEFiLM's streaming service is the monthly "LOVEFiLM Instant Presents" video over on their Youtube channel which highlights new titles or themed collections such as 'Best of British' available on their streaming service so you're always kept up to date with new deals and titles.
It's also worth mentioning here that LOVEFiLM has many titles that can be watched in HD including titles such as LOST, Inception, Salt and Blue Planet. NOW TV does not offer a HD option at the moment, so if top spec picture quality is for you, LOVEFiLM is the surer bet.
Sky have HBO locked down but...
However, Sky have HBO locked down and let's face it, HBO have some of the most popular TV series ever made on their books such as: The Sopranos, Sex and the City and the hugely of the moment Game of Thrones. However you cannot watch any of them on NOW TV so you would have to pay for the normal Sky service to get them.
Ways to watch the service
LOVEFiLM offers their streaming service on your Smart TVs, PS3, Xbox, Wii, Wii U, Kindle Fire and iPad on top of the usual computer/laptop option. NOW TV can be streamed on a computer, PS3, Xbox, iPad and some phones, but not on the Wii, Kindle or Smart TV.
The industry might be gradually moving towards online streaming but physical discs will always be some people's preferred way to watch a film.
Don't know your HDMI cable from your SCART and don't even want to know what bandwidth means? Well renting by post is only offered by LOVEFiLM as NOW TV is a purely online service which also makes LOVEFiLM perfect for video games as well as movies and TV. The DVD rental options also means you can watch the latest titles before NOW TV or LOVEFiLM have them for streaming, as neither will be able to stream for a few months at least after the DVD release.
NOW TV have launched with a £15 price for a monthly membership.
LOVEFiLM start at the bargain price of £5.99 a month for online streaming, with staggered packages to include films and games by post and more discs at a time. The top package at LOVEFiLM gives you unlimited instant movies and TV series (many in HD) and unlimited DVDs, Blu-ray and Games by post each month with 3 discs rented at a time for just £14.99, so still a little cheaper than NOW TV with all the extras added on top.
I think right now the NOW TV service has some good films but it still doesn't have all the benefits of the LOVEFiLM service.
With all entertainment services it really is the content that makes the difference so we'll just have to wait and see what programmes and movies Sky manages to secure but until then: sign up to LOVEFiLM.
